Benefits Manager

Serving as a professional “people person,” this role ensures that benefits plans and programs are administered appropriately and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, as well as our internal policies.

The Benefits Manager is responsible for the administration and oversight of benefits programs, including group health plans, life insurance, tuition benefits and leaves. Reporting to the Director of HR, you work with brokers and vendors to identify potential cost savings and value-added improvements, resolving a host of complex issues in the process. You maintain frequent correspondence with all team members in order to keep them apprised of new HR developments and ongoing initiatives. Diligent and methodical, you recognize and appreciate that your ultimate goal is to facilitate the health and well-being of the entire organization.

• Partner with the HR Director to develop, interpret, modify and communicate various benefit policies and procedures
• Work to establish and implement strategies for benefits improvement, participating in monthly meetings with the Benefits Broker to review plan performance
• Develop and maintain effective relationships with brokers and third-party providers to ensure maximum utilization of resources and services
• Coordinate and ensure the resolution of complicated benefit plan issues, overseeing premium payments
• Serve as an expert resource in matters concerning benefit programs, responding to internal benefits inquiries and troubleshooting related issues
• Identify recurring problems and subsequently develop prospective solutions, using sound logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each approach
• Lead the development of communication/education strategies that will keep team members informed of relevant benefits information – and in doing so, create and deliver effective team presentations, conduct employee meetings and sponsor guest speakers
• Manage all leaves of absence, including but not limited to those related to worker’s compensation, short-term disability, long-term disability, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and New York State Paid Sick Leave (NYS PSL) – and coordinate with payroll for collection of premiums due in arrears
• Oversee and manage all aspects of CPL’s annual benefits open enrollment – this includes coordinating with brokers/vendors; updating the human resources information system (HRIS); and managing updates to the employee handbook, benefits booklet, benefits summary sheets and CPL’s yearly notices
• Prepare a variety of government reports, including equal employment opportunity (EEO) and US Census Bureau reports
• Review and analyze HR processes, identifying ways to streamline, automate and incorporate changes to daily operations
• Be an expert in your trade, keeping up to date with federal/local laws and best practices in the industry and applying them appropriately to your daily work

• You have an exceptional ability to delineate intricate concepts, both verbally and in writing
• You’re analytically driven, with advanced computer skills that encompass data entry and processing, workplace communication programs and payroll and HR software
• You’re a creative problem-solver with resourceful thinking and innate leadership/coaching abilities
• You’re naturally empathetic, with elevated interpersonal skills
• You have a knack for maintaining accurate, up-to-date records
• You have a thorough knowledge of HR functions and best practices
• You earned a BS in human resources, business administration or a related field of study
• You have at least five years of relevant experience
• Previous AEC industry experience is a major plus
