California has always been one of the most challenging states in the country for employers.  As the COVID-19 pandemic continues on, 2021 looks to be an even more complicated labyrinth for employment law compliance.

During our annual Legal Update, Partners Maria Stearns and Brandon Sylvia of Rutan & Tucker, LLP will:

•            Summarize new employment laws for 2021;
•            Discuss significant cases from 2020 and their anticipated impact on employers; and
•            Identify the top compliance risks for 2021 and ways to proactively manage them.

Attendees will learn about the new and evolving laws and regulations governing workplaces and compliant practices, and gain insight into identifying potential problem areas for further analysis and risk mitigation.

Maria Stearns, Partner at Rutan & Tucker, LLP, represents local and national employers doing business in California. As part of her employment litigation practice, Ms. Stearns defends employers in cases involving: discrimination, retaliation and harassment claims; wage and hour class actions; and representative claims under California’s Private Attorneys General Act. Ms. Stearns also serves as a day-to-day resource for employers seeking guidance on issues that commonly arise as part of the employment relationship: WARN Act compliance; sexual harassment training; employee handbook and personnel policies; medical leave and disability accommodation obligations; commission and bonus agreements; and wage and hour compliance. Ms. Stearns has particular expertise in the healthcare, restaurant and retail industries. Brandon Sylvia, Partner at Rutan & Tucker, LLP, represents employers in all aspects of employment law. Mr. Sylvia’s practice includes handling litigation involving harassment, discrimination, retaliation, accommodation of disabilities, wage-and-hour violations (individual claims and class actions), misappropriation of trade secrets, and unfair competition. Mr. Sylvia also counsels employers on compliance issues, policies and procedures, and best practices for avoiding litigation and minimizing exposure on employment law claims.
