OC – Economic Update

January 24, 2023 @ 12:00 pm 2:00 pm PT

The world that has emerged post-pandemic is not only more complex but beset by numerous challenges: a multi-decade spike in inflation, rapid rate hikes, higher energy costs, and unprecedented labor shortages. The Federal Reserve is embarking in the most aggressive rate-hiking cycle since the late 70s. The economy is sending contradictory signals: real GDP was negative in the first half of the year, but the labor market continues to remain strong; the stock market has entered bear territory, but volatility remains subdued; consumer sentiment has cratered, yet spending is holding up. The fundamentals of the economy seem strong — low consumer debt, low business delinquencies, strong profits, healthy labor markets — but fears are sky-high that the economy will plunge into a recession soon. Financial markets are jittery, the world is on edge.

There is no question that the path of this expansion has become much narrower now compared to a year ago. The hope is that the Fed will be able to engineer a “soft-landing,” cooling off inflation without throttling growth. Will it succeed? Will the economy manage to avoid a hard landing? Will growth continue? Will inflation recede? This presentation will address these issues and more, such as:
•             Hard-landing or Soft-landing?
•             Will inflation be brought to heel without too much cost?
•             Could we head for a stagflation?
•             Will the market nosedive further?
•             Will labor shortages and supply disruptions persist?
•             Is the housing market heading for a significant correction?
•             Is winter coming for Europe?
•             What is the local outlook? Will OC fare better than the nation?
