Orange County, CA Shifting Perspectives: from Convention to Curiosity

Join X, the Moonshot Factory, in a session designed to help HR practitioners shift perspective, from HR as a risk mitigation function to HR as a function that unlocks a new path forward for people and culture. The X approach is both research-backed and experience-driven, and combine data, analytics, best practice, and case study examples to highlight how HR functions can evolve toward a culture focused on curiosity and innovation.

Participants will learn how failure powers the engine of creativity and how traditional performance management processes get this wrong. They will discuss how HR functions can achieve small wins toward a more creative, innovative culture, powered by a future-backed approach to thinking about their own HR moonshots. They will also show examples of how HR can borrow from product design to transform the types of experiences they create for employees.

Finally, how these tools create a culture of curiosity. Curiosity doesn’t just lead to great ideas, but it leads to intrinsic motivation – the kind of motivation that is internal to the individual and occurs when people have experiences that are challenging, interesting, or enjoyable. Research suggests that intrinsic motivation enhances performance, productivity, creativity, problem solving, conceptual thinking, and innovation. Paradoxically, even though this motivation comes from within the individual, organizations can still shape it in meaningful ways (e.g., helping employees grow and develop, creating opportunities for challenging and interesting work, allowing employees to pursue interests/curiosities at work) – all which lead to less reliance on extrinsic motivators, such as compensation, benefits, and promotion.

X, the Moonshot Factory, is a diverse group of inventors and entrepreneurs who build and launch technologies that aim to improve the lives of millions, even billions, of people. Our goal is to have 10x impact on the world’s most intractable problems, spurring the launch of self-driving cars (Waymo), drone-based delivery services (Wing), and internet connectivity via balloons (Loon). But do moonshots apply to HR? Yes. Our approach to radical innovation doesn’t just apply to our projects – it also applies to our people. As we reimagine how the world should work, we also need to reimagine how people work.
