Join us via Zoom on April 24th for our first Book Club event of 2024!

All participants will be mailed a FREE copy of the selected book upon registration. Our first book selection for this year is Creating Magic by Lee Cockerell. This event is reserved for NHRA members, and we ask that you provide your address at registration so that we can send you a copy of the book we'll be discussing. If you prefer audiobook, please make sure to note that within your registration. Please register by 3/27.

    Book Synopsis:

“It’s not the magic that makes it work; it’s the way we work that makes it magic.”

The secret for creating “magic” in our careers, our organizations, and our lives is simple: outstanding leadership—the kind that inspires employees, delights customers, and achieves extraordinary business results.

No one knows more about this kind of leadership than Lee Cockerell, the man who ran
Walt Disney World® Resort operations for over a decade. And in Creating Magic, he shares the leadership principles that not only guided his own journey from a poor farm boy in Oklahoma to the head of operations for a multibillion dollar enterprise, but that also soon came to form the cultural bedrock of the world’s number one vacation destination. But as Lee demonstrates, great leadership isn’t about mastering impossibly complex management theories. We can all become outstanding leaders by following the ten practical, common sense strategies outlined in this remarkable book. As straightforward as they are profound, these leadership lessons include:
    • Everyone is important.
    • Make your people your brand.
    • Burn the free fuel: appreciation, recognition, and encouragement.
    • Give people a purpose, not just a job.
Combining surprising business wisdom with insightful and entertaining stories from Lee’s four decades on the front lines of some of the world’s best-run companies, Creating Magic

shows all of us – from small business owners to managers at every level – how to become better leaders by infusing quality, character, courage, enthusiasm, and integrity into our workplace and into our lives.

Join us on May 14, 2024, to hear from Devin Hughes:

International Speaker, Thought Leader, and Author

    Presentation Overview:

Today’s workplaces are full of cynicism, paranoia, and burnout. But the best organizations foster hope, trust, compassion, and cooperation because their leaders build a culture where employees can thrive. When creating a healthier, higher-performing organization, it’s no surprise that culture matters most. If carefully designed, culture is the difference between success and failure, engagement and alienation, health and sickness, joy and drudgery.

But here’s the deal: very few HR leaders know how to design a culture that works in the “next normal.” Building a great workplace doesn’t have to be complicated; it starts with your employees. Leaders across an organization can learn invaluable skills for understanding employee well-being and how it impacts the culture at work. The research is clear—positive and inclusive environments are performance enhancers. They are characterized by higher productivity, less turnover, and more resilient cultures. Organizations with happy employees outperform the competition by as much as 202%. Happy and engaged employees are committed and passionate about their work, resulting in higher performance and lower turnover rates. Leaders who know how to cultivate positive emotion tap into an endless well of psychological capital – hope, optimism, confidence, resilience, and belief – that can keep people and teams innovating, creating value, and more successful even in tough times.

    Presentation Objectives:

    • Review the prevalence and cost of poor employee well-being and unhealthy culture.
    • Understand how Positive Psychology and Social-Emotional Intelligence impact employee performance and organizational health.
    • Learn key strategies to improve communication, trust, and engagement throughout your organization.

    Performance Feedback Culture

A company culture based on feedback can result in greater alignment with organizational values, improved engagement, and increased productivity. Achieving such an open culture is no easy feat. Employees tend to shy away from sharing their perspectives and managers often lack the skills to deliver feedback effectively. In this session we will review an organization’s approach to building a feedback-friendly culture, including a five-step plan to fuel feedback within the organization.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Fostering a Feedback Culture in Daily Operations: Strategies to integrate giving and receiving feedback seamlessly into the everyday culture of the organization.
    • Aligning HR Programs with a Feedback-Forward Approach: Methods to ensure that HR programs are synchronized with the principles of a feedback-forward organization, promoting ongoing development and constructive communication.

    • Leadership Engagement for a Feedback-Forward Culture: Approaches for leaders to actively participate in reinforcing a culture that emphasizes continuous feedback and improvement.

High-performance teams are essential for organizations to execute on business outcomes. Yet, here’s a warning for organizations: i4cp research found a 39% productivity loss from not managing collaboration in teams more intentionally.

Today’s teams are more complex than conventional methodologies support—teams are far larger, more interconnected, and more distributed than ever before. So how can leaders increase the contribution of their teams despite the complexity of collaboration required?

Join us for an enlightening session featuring i4cp’s Senior Vice President of Research Rob Cross, who will share highlights from i4cp’s latest study of team effectiveness. This session will focus on three points of collaboration that our research shows is statistically related to both team effectiveness and market performance:

    • The pattern of collaboration within the team – replicating high performance practices and avoiding drift into any dysfunction.
    • The quality of connections within the team – with specific emphasis on two forms of trust as being highly predictive of top performing teams.
    • The external collaborations that are distributed through the team to promote effectiveness and efficiency
