Presentation Overview:

Veterans are some of the best employees you can hire, but their retention rate is low. Why are veterans so great and how can your company recruit, onboard, and retain them? With a tight job market, companies are increasingly interested in motivating employees and attracting the best talent. Forward-thinking companies see the value of military veterans in the workforce and want the best tools to recruit, onboard, and retain top veteran talent. In this one-hour talk, Wes explains the top five reasons why veterans are good for business, dispels myths and misconceptions about veterans, compares the differences between military and corporate culture, and gives key takeaways so audiences can take action.

Presentation Objectives:

  • Connect Veterans: Veteran-ERGs, veteran affinity groups, and voluntary, employee-driven support channels can increase camaraderie, boost morales, and help build an organization's external reputation.
  • Corporate Basic Training: Most veterans are mission-focused. Share your organization's mission, vision, values, and goal. How does their job affect the big picture?
  • Assign a Veteran Peer Advisor: Assign the veteran new hire a veteran of a similar age and similar title (Sr. Mgr, Director, etc.) who can guide the new hire through initial onboarding and acclimate to the new role.
  • Train the Entire Team: Don't force veterans to adapt to corporate culture until you make a good-faith effort to understand military culture and language. It should be a two-way street.
