The Manager-Coaching Gap: Why Leadership Failure Is an Infrastructure Problem, Not a Talent Problem

AI is changing the shape of every career, but the skills that make people irreplaceable haven't changed, they've just gotten harder to find inside broken management structures. This session unpacks the manager-coaching gap: the structural reason so many capable people stall out, and why the fix isn't more talent, it's better infrastructure. Drawing on 20+ years leading HR through PE-backed transformation, ten-plus acquisitions, and an IPO, Kim Lee will share the pattern she sees in the early on in nearly every engagement: role ambiguity, unresolved performance issues left to fester, and managers one week from breaking. Attendees will learn a practical framework for building coaching capability into how work actually gets done, not as a perk, but as infrastructure. This is a Monday-morning playbook, not theory.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

- Identify the three early-warning signals of a coaching infrastructure gap inside their own organization.

- Apply the Heart + Backbone framework to balance empathy and accountability in manager development.

-Distinguish talent problems from structural problems when diagnosing leadership failure.

- Build one concrete coaching habit their managers can practice within a week of the session.
